The Miracle Baseball League
ACCESS is the proud home of the first Miracle League of Wilmington. We have partnered with the City of Wilmington, New Hanover County, and the Olsen Park committee to bring this baseball facility, nationally known as a “Miracle Field” for children with special needs, to our community.
The Miracle League organization was created in 1998 in Conyers, Ga., when a group of parents decided to organize a baseball game for their children with special needs. The 35 children named themselves The Miracle League. Today, there are over 200 Miracle League organizations in the United States and over 100 more that are in the initial planning stages, making The Miracle League the fastest growing baseball program for children with disabilities.
The Wilmington field, which is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2010, will be fully accessible to children and adults with or without disabilities. Because traditional baseball diamonds were not designed with wheelchairs and walkers in mind, the Miracle Field will be made of a specialized flat, rubber surface that allows such devices to move freely. The surface will be a complete replica of your normal baseball diamond but without grass and dirt. There will be painted lines, flat bases for devices to roll over, batters circles and even accessible dugouts for each team to gather in. The Miracle Field has been designed to be accessible in every way for anyone with a disability. This includes the parking lots, family rooms/bathrooms, picnic areas, concession stands, and the bleachers and spectator area.
